College Prep English 9 Syllabus

Course Description:
During this semester students will be reading Animal Farm, Of Mice and Men, Pudd’nhead Wilson, Romeo and Juliet, short stories, poetry, and completing a mandatory research paper along with other papers, projects, and grammar activities.

3. Be responsible
Materials Needed for Class:
- Chromebook & earbuds/headphones
- paper & pencil
- text/novel we are currently reading
Textbooks & Other Books:
Students are responsible for his/her assigned literature text book.
We will be reading Animal Farm, Of Mice and Men using an online PDF.
Pudd’nhead Wilson will be loaned to each student.
Assignments:
Assignments will be completed on Google Classroom & via Zoom.
Students will have assignments ready to be turned in by the time class begins, unless other arrangements have been made.
NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.
In addition, students must complete a MANDATORY research paper in order to pass and receive credit for the course.
Quizzes will usually be announced, and tests will always be announced. The final exam is cumulative.
Each student’s grade will be split into the following areas:
Classwork - 10%
Homework - 10%
Participation - 10%
Quizzes - 30%
Tests - 20%
Projects - 20%
Total Approx Points = 500ish
* All percentages are approximate and subject to change as deemed necessary by the instructor.

- Research Paper (research, outlines, rough drafts, revision, editing)
Major Projects:
- Research Paper: Students will complete a research paper. The assignment will include research notes, outline, rough draft, editing, revising and composing a final draft. Students must complete the assignment to pass the class.
- Bucket List: Students will create a list of goals to accomplish in their high school years, as well as their life. This list will be used as inspiration for some writing assignments.
* All projects listed are subject to change as deemed necessary by the instructor.
Grading:
Students will have many opportunities to earn points in this class. Each student’s grade is based on points, which will calculate into a percentage. The school grading scale will be used to determine the corresponding letter grade. I DO NOT ROUND GRADES. When I offer extra credit it will be made available to the entire class. The School Grading Scale will be used. Grades can be viewed on Progress Book. It is the responsibility of each student to monitor his/her own grade. Reach out if there is a problem or a discrepancy.
Standards: ELA Common Core Standards
Cheating / Plagiarism:
Cheating and plagiarism will not be accepted. Cheating includes every aspect of the class (writing of papers, homework, quizzes, and tests) and applies to both the person giving and receiving answers/help on assignments. Plagiarism is against the law. Students must cite their sources. Plagiarism/Cheating is a violation of the school policy and will be reported to the school guidance office and administration. The school plagiarism/cheating policy will be strictly enforced. The second offense will result in automatic failure of the course.
Attendance:
Students are expected to show up to class & the zoom meeting on time.
There will be a Google Classroom attendance "quiz" each day to document attendance.
Technology:
Students will be using their Chromebook to facilitate their education, whether in-person or remotely. Cell phones are not permitted in-person and during zoom classes.
